Job Description

Part-time; 8 hours will be available weekly for each position in this role; employees in this class perform inspections ensuring compliance with the North Carolina State Fire Prevention Code; answers and investigates reports of hazardous conditions and orders corrections, and prepares reports on assigned inspections. A variety of tasks may be assigned to assist with the day-to-day operations of the Fire Department. Work is performed under the supervision of the Assistant Chief/Fire Marshal and is evaluated through observation and written reports concerning the quality and effectiveness of work performed.

General Duties and Responsibilities: Inspects all buildings within the City of Lenoir for compliance with fire codes; explains code violations to business owners and advises concerning corrections of violations; prepares fire inspection reports and files; assists with/participates in the design of evacuation plans for all types of buildings; monitors fire and evacuation drills for specific occupancies; performs other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Considerable knowledge of firefighting techniques, procedures and principles; knowledge of the application of information technology to the work; thorough knowledge of City streets and layout; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and members of the public; ability to make sound judgements; knowledge of fire inspection techniques, principles and practices; general knowledge of building, mechanical and electrical codes; knowledge of laws and regulations relating to the control and prevention of fires; knowledge of fire department and City policies and procedures, and federal, state and local laws and regulations. Must have skills in: operating computers; radio/communications equipment; planning, organization and decision-making; public speaking and public relations; oral and written communications; and excellent customer service skills.

Requirements: Possession of NC Standard Level I, II, or III Fire Inspector Certificate; possession of valid driver's license; and have graduated from a high school or possess a GED.

Hiring procedures: All applicants for the part-time Fire Inspector position must submit an official City of Lenoir application to NC Works Career Planning and Placement Center or directly to the City of Lenoir Human Resources Department. Candidates will be selected for interviews based upon submitted application, references and additional documentation (certifications, etc.). Selected candidates must pass a pre-employment physical, drug test, and criminal background check.
