Job Description
Little Gasparilla Island Fire and Rescue is looking to find that unique individual who is interested in serving a barrier island community providing fire and EMS support to residents and visitors. The ideal candidate is a Firefighter II/Paramedic with experience who is interested in a slower pace and amazing work environment located on Little Gasparilla Island. Little Gasparilla Island is a bridgeless, barrier island located on the SW coast of Florida, due east of Englewood FL accessible by boat or water taxi, no roads (golf cart paths) or stores. Just nature at its best.
The Fire Chief reports to the Little Gasparilla Island Fire and Rescue Inc (LGIFR) Board and is responsible for providing and managing Fire/Paramedic services to the island residents and other visitors 24/7 365 days per year. LGIFR operates with a standing agreement with Charlotte County Fire Rescue who provides treatment and transport services in the event of patient evacuation and or fire support for fires.
The volume of calls varies but on average from 20-40 calls per year, predominantly EMS calls from minor injuries to cardiac arrest or atv accidents with significant injuries. There are on average 1-3 fire calls per year from small brush/transformer/electrical fires to rarely full house fires.
The island has experienced several direct hits or storm surges due to hurricanes in the last 5 years. During these times the Fire Chief serves as the lead emergency service coordination and management for the island, coordinating rescue and recovery services with the Fire House as the central command station.
Depending on the applicant, several housing options are available including housing full time on the island, with shared firehouse space for relief/rotating personnel or on shift housing. The Fire House is located centrally on the island in a 3-bedroom, 3 bath home which houses all fire equipment and resources.
Salary Range: $65,000-$75,000.00

Requirements
- Applicants must possess and maintain the following current credentials:
- 1. Florida Firefighter II Certification
- o Current State of Florida Firefighter Certificate of Compliance/Firefighter II certification.
- 2. Florida Paramedic Certification
- o Current Florida Department of Health Paramedic certification/license.
- 3. Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
- o Current ACLS certification from an approved provider.
- 4. Basic Life Support (BLS)
- o Current BLS/Healthcare Provider certification from an approved provider.
- 5. Emergency Vehicle Operations Course (EVOC)
- o Current EVOC certification/course completion meeting the employing agency’s requirements.
- Florida departments commonly specify Firefighter II, Florida Paramedic, ACLS, BLS/CPR, and EVOC among their required or preferred qualifications.
- MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- • Must be at least 18 years of age.
- • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
- • Current Florida Firefighter II certification.
- • Current Florida Paramedic certification.
- • Current ACLS certification.
- • Current BLS certification.
- • Current EVOC certification.
- • Valid Florida driver’s license or ability to obtain one as required by the employing agency.
- • Ability to successfully complete the Fire Boards background investigation, medical examination, physical ability testing, and other pre-employment requirements.
- • Ability to perform the essential physical functions of firefighting and emergency medical services.
- • Ability to work effectively under stressful and potentially hazardous conditions.
- • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
- KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- The successful candidate should demonstrate:
- • Knowledge of modern firefighting principles, practices, and procedures.
- • Knowledge of emergency medical and advanced life support practices.
- • Knowledge of fire behavior, fire suppression, rescue, ventilation, forcible entry, and overhaul.
- • Knowledge of hazardous materials response and emergency scene safety.
- • Knowledge of emergency vehicle operations and defensive driving.
- • Ability to rapidly assess emergency situations and make sound decisions under pressure.
- • Ability to perform physically demanding firefighting and rescue operations.
- • Ability to provide advanced medical treatment in accordance with established protocols.
- • Ability to safely operate fire-rescue apparatus and emergency equipment.
- • Ability to communicate effectively with patients, coworkers, supervisors, hospitals, law enforcement, and other emergency personnel.
- • Ability to work effectively as part of a team and within the Incident Command System.
- • Ability to maintain accurate medical, incident, and departmental records.
- • Ability to maintain composure and professionalism during stressful or life-threatening situations.
