How to become a firefighter in Florida

Certification. Florida requires the Firefighter Minimum Standards certificate (Firefighter I and II) from the Bureau of Fire Standards and Training at the Florida State Fire College for any paid firefighter. Most departments also require a Florida EMT or paramedic license and the CPAT.

How hiring works. Departments hire directly and most run continuous or frequent recruitments because of growth and turnover. County systems such as Miami-Dade, Orange, Hillsborough, and Palm Beach hire in large classes.

Because state certification is required before hire, most Florida candidates complete a fire academy and EMT program on their own before applying.

Wherever you apply, expect the same core steps: meet the age, education, and driver's license minimums, pass a written exam and a physical ability test (often the CPAT), clear an oral board interview, and pass a background investigation and medical exam.
