When working toward a job as a firefighter, keep this list of possible disqualifiers in mind. Requirements vary by department, but these categories represent the most common grounds for disqualification in fire service hiring processes across the country.

Felony and Criminal History

Any conviction of a felony committed as an adult within the past 10 years. Older felonies are typically reviewed on a case-by-case basis.

Any misdemeanor or felony conviction while employed in a public safety or criminal justice capacity.

More than two adult misdemeanor convictions within the past five years (including deferrals and dismissals).

Juvenile felony convictions considered on a case-by-case basis.

Any sexual offense.

Driving History

A current revoked, suspended, or canceled driver's license.

A revoked, suspended, or canceled driver's license within the past five years.

The inability to obtain a valid driver's license.

Two or more traffic crimes in the last five years (DWI, driving while license suspended, reckless driving, negligent driving, etc.).

Two or more at-fault accidents in the past five years.

Drug Use

Failure to pass pre-employment drug testing.

Conviction for possession or sale of a controlled substance, including marijuana.

Employment and Conduct

Failure to clear medical screening and qualification.

Discharge for cause from most recent employer.

Two or more for-cause terminations (includes leaving an employer in lieu of termination).

Dishonorable discharge from the United States armed forces.

Failure to accurately and truthfully record information on the employment application, personal history questionnaire, or any other form during the hiring process.

Any dishonest or misleading statements made during any stage of the hiring process.
