E X A M I N A T I O N A N N O U N C E M E N T
The Civil Service Commission of the City of Bridgeport will hold a competitive promotional examination for
DEPUTY FIRE MARSHAL at a date, time and location to be determined but is tentatively planned for July 21,
2026. Qualified candidates will be notified of the final details at a later date.

APPLICATIONS: Each candidate must complete an online application form supplied by the Commission and
file it no later than 11:45 P.M. on Tuesday, June 30, 2026. Each candidate must submit a payroll deduction
authorization form for a security deposit of $150 as part of their application. This security deposit will be
deducted for any applicant who does not appear for any part of the examination at the proper date and time*.

SALARY RANGE: $119,303 - $124,707 - $130,625; appointments to be made at the minimum or entrance
salary of $119,303 a year. Advancements within the salary range may be made in accordance with the terms
of the contract between the City of Bridgeport, and the Bridgeport Fire Fighter Local 834, AFL-CIO.
DUTES: This is a technical supervisory position in the Fire Marshal’s Division of the Bridgeport Fire
Department and is under the supervision of the Fire Marshal. A job description can be obtained from the Office
of the Civil Service Commission upon written request.
REQUIREMENTS: This examination is open to members of the Bridgeport Fire Service who have at least 3
years of experience with the Bridgeport Fire Department at the rank of a bona fide Senior Fire Inspector or a
bona fide Fire Inspector prior to December 19, 2024**
, and who meet the following requirements: Knowledge
of department rules, regulations and practices; fire prevention theory, principles, practices and trends;
applicable codes, laws, rules and regulations and their enforcement; basic supervisory techniques; reasons
and intent of fire code requirements; building construction; fire protection systems and must be able to explain
these matters to persons of varying education and varying knowledge of these matters; how to coordinate,
conduct and complete a fire investigation; conduct plan review of complex building plans; conduct inspections
during construction and through completion to certificate of occupancy; review modifications and to make
recommendations as to approval or denial in accordance with State statutes; foster a positive customer service
work environment and be receptive to appropriate customer concerns; excellent reasoning, critical thinking and
problem solving skills especially under conditions which may at times be psychologically and emotionally
stressful; communicate fluently both orally and in writing; organize and prioritize work; establish

and maintain good working relationships; lead, supervise, correct, develop, and guide employees under your
supervision; communicate effectively with people who are in physical or emotional distress in a respectful and
courteous manner; have good hand eye coordination and fine manipulation skills in order to operate computers
and other office equipment.
Must possess or be able to obtain a valid Connecticut driver’s license and must be able to drive to locations
throughout the City. A good driving record is a condition of employment, and it will be checked; Must provide
evidence as required by law to work in the United States; As a condition of employment, must possess and
retain certification as a fire inspector per Connecticut General Statute 541 (s) 29-298.
Work is performed in a variety of settings and conditions, both office and outside work, in all kinds of weather
conditions. Investigations may be performed in hazardous conditions such as structurally unsafe buildings,
toxic or noxious atmospheres and high stress situations. Hand eye coordination and fine manipulation skills
are necessary to operate computers and other office machinery. Must be able to climb stairs and ladders and
walk on scaffolding. Must be able to crouch, kneel/squat, crawl, reach and bend at the waist. The Deputy Fire
Marshal must have good vision, as well as good listening and hearing skills. Occasionally, lifting of up to 50
pounds may be necessary.
SUBJECTS OF EXAMINATION: The Assessment Center will consist of exercises that simulate some of the
work that a Deputy Fire Marshal in the Bridgeport Fire Department is required to do. The Assessment Center
will be weighted at 95%. The City Charter requires that efficiency and seniority be considered in examinations.
Seniority points will be computed and weighted at 5%. An efficiency rating shall be done for each candidate
who passes the exam and only those with passing efficiency ratings will be placed on the employment list.

(“ADA”) should notify the Office of the Civil Service Commission in writing as soon as possible, but no later
than ten (10) calendar days prior to the announced examination date.
