Firefighter EMT Jobs, explained
- How many firefighter EMT jobs are open in Ohio?
- 24 EMT postings are open right now at 20 departments in Ohio on FireJobs. Members see the salary, closing date and application link for each.
- Is EMT certification required to be a firefighter?
- At most career departments, yes, either before you apply or within the first year. A basic EMT course takes about one semester and makes you eligible for far more postings. Paramedic licensure opens the firefighter/paramedic positions, which tend to pay more.
- What is the difference between a firefighter EMT and a firefighter paramedic?
- An EMT provides basic life support: assessment, CPR, oxygen, bleeding control and a limited set of medications. A paramedic provides advanced life support, including IV access, cardiac monitoring and a wide drug formulary, and needs 1,200 or more hours of additional training. Departments pay paramedics more and often require the license for some positions.
- Do firefighter EMT postings include an academy?
- Most entry-level postings do. You are hired as a recruit, complete a 12 to 24 week fire academy, and serve a probationary year. Some postings list EMT and Firefighter I as prerequisites instead; the posting says which.
