Requirements

GENERAL DEFINITION OF WORK:

Performs difficult protective service directing and intermediate administrative work supervising a fire company or performing specialized work in the Fire Department; does related work as required.
Work is performed under the general supervision of the County Fire Marshal and the department?s fire chief. Supervision is exercised over subordinate career personnel of the fire department.

TYPICAL TASKS:

Responds to fire alarms and other emergencies, directs the work of fire suppression and emergency personnel; coordinates response
Supervises and participates in the wok of extinguishing fires and the performance of related life and property protection, acts as fire ground commander/ranking officer until relieved by a chief officer.
Plans and directs the activities of the fire company in the training of all phases of fire fighting and rescue; instructs in training programs and skills.
Instructs career personnel in work assignment and procedures.
Ensures the proper condition and appearance of apparatus, equipment and personnel.
Oversees the daily functions within the fire station.
Supervises and conducts testing of pumps hoses, hydrants, and other equipment as needed; supervises the maintenance of that equipment.
Initiates pre-fire planning process.
Supervises and reviews job performance of all career personnel.
Monitors work plan objectives; training reports, reviews leave usage and holiday and vacation schedules for staff.
Prepares schedules and maintains records for assigned personnel; monitors work plan objectives, training reports, leave usage, holiday and vacation status of subordinate paid or career personnel.
Directs safety training and compliance for the workplace.
Coordinates work with other department; prepares reports as required.
Performs related tasks as required.

KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Thorough knowledge of modern fire fighting techniques and equipment.
Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of fire suppression, rescue and emergency medical activities.
Thorough knowledge of operation and maintenance of apparatus and equipment.
Thorough knowledge of supervisory principles and practices and ability to implement same.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with subordinates, superiors, other officials and the general public.
Ability to establish and maintain coordination of communications and activities between paid personnel and volunteer members of the department.
Ability to comply with NFPA and OSHA regulations and equipment tests.
General knowledge of fire prevention laws and methods and the ability to plan and implement such programs.
Ability to plan, lay out and review activities of personnel and to maintain discipline.
Ability to train fire fighters in basic fire fighting practices and procedures.
Ability to prepare and review reports and effectively communicate with personnel and the public.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

High school diploma or equivalent and five years fire fighting and rescue experience, EMT experience and progressive command experience at the company officer level; prefer supervisory experience with any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from an accredited community college with major course work in fire science or a related field.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:

North Carolina or national Firefighter II certification required. Must possess current NC-EMT Basic. Prefer Fire Service Instructor certification, Rescue Technician certification or any combination of Fire Officer or Executive Officer training. Prefer Fire Prevention Inspector Level I.
