Lateral Firefighter Paramedics will start with a four (4) week orientation to acclimate them to learn and practice SBCoFD firefighting practices; equipment and apparatus care, usage, safety, and maintenance; fire terminology, codes, policies, procedures and operations; and state and local laws. Incumbents will start at Step 8 of the salary range: $78,012.48** (56-hour workweek).

ABOUT THE DEPARMTENT
San Bernardino County Fire is an all-risk/full-service fire department committed to providing the highest level of service in the most efficient and cost effective manner to the citizens and communities that we serve.
At 20,160 square miles, San Bernardino County is the largest county in the continental United States. Our jurisdiction encompasses approximately 19,200 square miles of extremely diverse environments that stretch from the Los Angeles County line on the west, to the Colorado River on the east, to the Nevada State line and Kern and Inyo counties on the north. We provide services to more than 60 communities/cities and all unincorporated areas of the county.
Our jurisdiction encounters hazards that include floods, fires, earthquakes, and train derailments, among others, that can impact highly urbanized metropolitan areas, industrial centers, and major portions of the most vital interstate highway and railroad transportation corridors that serve Southern California. We are also home to major entertainment venues such as the Glen Helen Amphitheater and the California Speedway. Our mountain resort areas, the Colorado River and vast high-use recreational desert lands underscore our diverse geography.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
Probationary Period: Successful completion of the San Bernardino County Fire Orientation and obtaining ICEMA Paramedic Accreditation in San Bernardino County is required (candidate is responsible for obtaining ICEMA Paramedic Accreditation prior to Orientation completion). Upon successful completion of the above Orientation, incumbents will serve a one-year probationary period. Successful completion of this probationary period will include completion of the Firefighter II Certification through the California State Fire Service Training and Education System.
Certifications: Firefighter Paramedics must acquire and maintain all job-required certifications, including CA Paramedic License and ICEMA Paramedic Accreditation, as well as CPR & ACLS.
Physical Requirements: Must be able to perform during high stress situations. Must be able to hear in the normal audio range, without correction. Must possess the strength and stamina sufficient to lift and carry equipment and individuals up to 200 pounds, and be able to wear self-contained breathing apparatus, and do so with mobility and flexibility without jeopardizing the safety of self or other members. Vision must be correctable to 20/20. May be required to pass a color perception test. Must be able to work in a variety of environmental conditions.
Other Requirements: Applicants will be fingerprinted and must pass a thorough background investigation which may include, but is not limited to, the following: fingerprinting for a Department of Justice criminal background check, polygraph, pre-employment psychological evaluation, DMV driving record check, military record check, reference checks, and review of prior employment history check. An applicant may be automatically disqualified for misrepresentation, falsification, or omission of pertinent facts in the screening/selection/background check process. Job offers are made contingent upon passing a medical examination and meeting the medical requirements of NFPA 1582 (Standard Medical Requirements for Firefighter). Applicant must successfully pass a pre-employment drug test. Failure to meet medical standards may result in the withdrawal of employment offer. All employees must adhere to the provisions of the County Fire and Special Districts Dress Code, which prohibits all visible tattoos.
Health and Physical Condition: Persons seeking appointment to this class must meet the safety health and physical condition standards deemed necessary and proper for performance of the duties established by the San Bernardino County Fire District.
Dress: Candidates, applicants, and employees are expected to dress appropriately for all phases of testing, interviews, background, and on the job; dress should be business-casual at a minimum, unless instructed otherwise.
Experience: Two (2) years of journey-level Firefighter experience. Experience must be as a full-time, regular Firefighter (or higher rank) in good standing with a public fire agency, authority or department that provides Fire/EMS services. Experience may include probation, and must have been obtained within the last three (3) years.
Note: Paid call, extra-help, and/or volunteer experience does not apply.
License: Must possess and maintain a valid State of California Paramedic License OR possess a National Paramedic Certification (NRP) and meet qualifications for a CA Paramedic License.
Certificate: Must possess Firefighter I Certification or equivalent.
Copies of the CA Paramedic License, NRP, and Firefighter I Certification must be attached to the application in order for your application to continue in the process.
In addition, candidate must possess a current Driver License, must be at least 18 years of age, and have completed High School (or equivalent).
AT THE INTERVIEW: Applicant must provide a copy of current ACLS & CPR/BLS cards.
The ideal candidate will possess three (3) years or more of experience as a Firefighter Paramedic, CA Firefighter II certification, and CA State Paramedic License or ICEMA Paramedic certification.

The NREMT based Paramedic Skills Assessment is expected to be scheduled for the week of July 19, 2021.
Candidates must be successful in the Paramedic Skills Assessment in order to be placed on the eligible list. The top candidates on the eligible list will be invited to participate in the selection interview process.
