The City of Harrisonburg Fire Department is launching an inaugural program and is seeking to fill two (2) full-time Community Paramedic positions funded through a grant provided by the Department of Justice. The Community Paramedic role is a full-time position with benefits and a preferred hiring range of $22.21 - $25.54 per hour (equivalent to $46,196 - $53,123 annually); however, an exact salary will be dependent upon the selected candidate`s qualifications and experience and in compliance with City Policy Section 3: Compensation. These positions are eligible for the VRS Enhanced Hazardous Duty coverage.

As a Community Paramedic with the city, you will:

Respond to emergent and non-emergent scenes/locations to collaborate with law enforcement and other crisis/mental health resources where individuals are experiencing substance use and/or mental health crisis;
Respond to substance use and mental health emergencies as part of the Crisis Intervention Team (CIT);
Examine, screen, treat, and coordinate health resources and services for patients, which may include but are not limited to point of care laboratory testing based on the paramedic?s education, training, and competency;
Conduct and assist with the re-entry plans established by local law enforcement agencies and/or the regional jail, to include welfare checks, medical evaluations, and community wrap-around service referrals;
Observe, record, and report to the care team and/or patient case manager on the individual?s conditions, response to medications, significant findings, incidents, and treatments;
Conduct risk assessments;
Administer care consistent with program policies, standard operating procedures, and treatment/case management orders;
Follow up with patients and case managers after the conclusion of a crisis to report improvements or additional service needs;
Conduct patient education pertaining to chronic disease management, mental health resources, and substance use resources;
Provide basic and advanced life support in collaboration with local emergency medical service agencies;
Communicate and regularly interact with the staff teams of the community services board, regional jail, healthcare system, probation/parole, law enforcement organizations, emergency communications, and health department, as well as neighborhood/community members;
Operate a City vehicle in the performance of duties;
Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Minimum Requirements:

High school diploma and considerable (3-5 years) experience as a paramedic or healthcare clinician (e.g. registered nurse or more highly credentialed) with considerable (3-5 years) pre-hospital experience. A post-secondary degree in emergency health services, emergency medical services or social work is preferred but not required for consideration.
Valid driver`s license.
Possession of the following:
Emergency Vehicle Operators Level III Certification;
Virginia Paramedic Certification or equivalent;
Basic Life Support Certification (CPR); and
Advanced Cardiac Life Support Certification.
Certification as a Community Paramedic (CP-C) is preferred but not required for consideration.

The ideal candidates will have:
Thorough knowledge of:
The principles and techniques of emergency medical care;
Crisis intervention skills and techniques;
Mental health, substance use/abuse, and at-risk patient populations.
General knowledge of comprehensive opioid, stimulant, and substance abuse site-based programs and community paramedicine programs.
Comprehensive skill:
Related to the completion and maintenance of patient care reports;
Related to medical monitoring of patients and ability to read, edit, and print patient reports;
In operating direct patient care equipment, including but not limited to a cardiac monitor, telemedicine equipment, and laboratory value equipment.
The ability to:
Provide patient treatment and follow navigation flow charts;
Access and complete communications center reports and computer-aided dispatch files;
Utilize laboratory analysis equipment and complete data processing;
Compute and convert measurements and quantities of medicines (dosing calculations, pill counting, etc.);
Operate an emergency vehicle during various emergency and non-emergency situations and weather events.
The selected candidates for this position will be subject to the following screenings and must receive satisfactory results:
DMV Driving Record Review;
Drug Screen;
Personal History Statement*;
Criminal Background Investigation;
Industry-Specific Physical Exam.
