The Farmers Branch Fire Department anticipates hiring up to 5 candidates from this hiring process.
The City of Farmers Branch is currently seeking candidates for the position of Firefighter/Paramedic. Candidates who are certified as Paramedic only are encouraged to apply. Preference may be given to candidates who are certified as both Firefighter and Paramedic. Upon completion of Fire Academy, Paramedic only candidates will immediately move to the Firefighter/Paramedic pay scale.
The purpose of this position is to function as a task level Firefighter/Paramedic.

Essential Job Functions:
This position fights fires and handles firefighting equipment as directed by the officer in charge; performs extinguishment, rescue, ventilation, salvage, and overhaul functions; performs basic and/or advanced life support activities tied to supporting the department’s EMS program; will ride on Fire Department apparatus and ambulances.
The firefighter, in the absence of a regularly appointed Driver, may be selected to assume those roles including all responsibilities associated with the assignment. They participate in all department training activities and company level drills, and attend outside training classes as directed by the department. Keeps all assigned equipment and fire station clean and in a state of readiness.
Education and Experience:
To be considered for the position of Firefighter/Paramedic:

Must be at least the age of 18.
Have a High School Diploma or equivalent (Fire Industry Associates Degree is preferred)
Preferred: Have a valid Texas Commission on Fire Protection Basic Firefighter Certification or equivalent (IFSAC Seal FF1 and FF2)
Have a valid Texas Department of State Health Services Paramedic Certification or National Registry Paramedic Certification, or be within 90 days of completion of a paramedic training program at time of application.
Have a current, valid driver’s license with a good driving record (no more than 3 citations/accidents within the last 3 years; no DWI/DUI convictions within the past 10 years)
If applicable, an honorable discharge from the military
Must complete and pass a Physical Agility Test. Test date to be determined.
If selected, must be available for Panel interviews and Fire Chief interviews.
If selected as a final candidate, must pass a pre-employment drug screen, polygraph test, psychological exam, criminal background check, and physical exam.

Exposure to dust, flames and smoke in the suppression of fires; physical demands require considerable physical effort with heavy lifting (over 100 lbs), carrying, pushing, reaching, and crawling; requires heavy muscular effort with resulting fatigue of arms, legs, back or sensory facilities.
Once hired, if not already certified as a Basic Firefighter with the Texas Commission on Fire Protection, candidate will be required to attend and complete fire academy, as a condition of continued employment.
