Firefighter
JOB SUMMARY
Firefighters are required to perform all tasks related to the basic functions of fire control, extinguishment, and fire prevention. In addition, firefighters are expected to be competent in emergency medical treatment, hazardous materials response, and technical rescue skills such as confined space, vehicle, water, and rope rescue techniques. A firefighter must be competent in the proper methods and techniques of forcible entry, ropes, portable extinguishers, ladders, fire hose, salvage, overhaul, fire streams, fire apparatus, ventilation, rescue, self-contained breathing apparatus, emergency medical treatment and inspection practices. Firefighters must be willing to continually learn and advance in rank within the department. He/She must promote good public relations for the Alton Fire Department and the City of Alton. A firefighter must perform all daily routine duties as well as any other duties assigned by supervising officers.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
▪ Check personal protective equipment for serviceability each day.
▪ Wash and clean department vehicles and apparatus.
▪ Maintain department property: wash hose, clean and check equipment and apparatus, assist with mechanical duties on apparatus, clean and wash floors and walls, including restrooms.
▪ Study and drill in the following: firefighting principles and practices, equipment operation and maintenance, first-aid, rescue techniques, street locations, and fire prevention activities.
▪ Minimum of three (3) hours on the job training daily.
▪ Perform code enforcement inspections and make drawings and pre-fire plans of various buildings within the city.
▪ Respond to fire alarms with a company: lay and connect hose, direct water streams, use portable extinguishers, forcible entry tools, breathing apparatus, ladders, appliances and tools.
▪ Ventilate burning buildings by opening windows, cutting holes in roofs and floors, and using smoke ejectors and positive pressure fans.
▪ Perform salvage and overhaul techniques at fire scenes
▪ Return to quarters and clean and check all equipment and apparatus and insure readiness for the next emergency.
▪ Assist with rescue activities and perform emergency medical care on patients.
▪ Perform related work as requested by Chief or his designee.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
▪ Graduation from an accredited high school or the possession of a GED Certificate for high school awarded by a state or the United States government.
▪ Must possess Emergency Medical Technician- Basic license from Illinois Department of Public Health or have the ability to obtain license from IDPH by the date of hire.
▪ Must also become licensed by the Illinois Department of Public Health as an Emergency Medical Technician Paramedic within thirty (30) months of their original appointment date.
▪ Establish and maintain residency in the City of Alton within 90 days of completion probationary
period (1 year from date of hire plus time away at academy) or within select area for $1,500.00 per year until 10 years of service.
▪ Valid Illinois Driver License and able to secure an Illinois Driver License, Class "B", within 90 days of completion of probationary period (1 year from date of hire plus time away at academy).
▪ Minimum age of not less than 21 years; maximum age of not yet 35 years.
▪ In excellent physical condition as proven by a physician selected by the Civil Service Commission.
▪ Vision: Correctable to 20/20 with normal color and depth perception, proven by appropriate tests.
▪ Successful completion of Illinois Firefighter Basic Academy within one year of hire.
▪ A general knowledge of mechanical principles.
▪ Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; to learn a variety of firefighting duties and methods within a reasonable period of time; to climb ladders and work at considerable heights; to think and act quickly in emergency situations.
▪ Physical strength, stamina and agility sufficient to perform strenuous work, under adverse weather and hazardous conditions.
▪ Good general intelligence and emotional stability.
