This position is open to all regular employees of the Mobile Fire Department now serving in the class of Firefighter or Firemedic, who have not less than two (2) years of service in such classes with the Mobile Fire Department immediately preceding the final filing date and who have not received an unsatisfactory service rating in the two previous years.

(Download PDF reader) The examination process will consist of four components: (1) a written test counting 40% of the final grade, (2) field exercise 40%, (3) seniority counting 10% of the final grade, and (4) education counting 10% of the final grade. Applicants must score at least 70% on each component of the examination process in order to be eligible for a place on the promotion list.
Scores for the Seniority Component will be based on an evaluation scale consisting of total time in the Mobile Fire Department within the sworn fire classification series.
Scores for the Educational Component will be based on an evaluation scale that was developed using the educational incentive policy.
Employees not currently receiving Public Safety educational incentive pay must make an application with appropriate documentation by the final filing date of the examination.
The date for the written exam is August 26th, 2025. Candidates will be individually notified when and where to report for the written exam.

The tentative date for the field exercise is the week of September 8th, 2025. Candidates who pass the written exam will be individually notified with additional details regarding the field exercise.
Graduation from a standard senior high school, or the successful completion of the General Educational Development (GED) test, preferably supplemented by college level courses in firefighting or emergency medical techniques, and a minimum of two years experience as a Firefighter or Firemedic; or a combination of education and experience equivalent to these requirements.
Special Requirement
Must possess a valid driver's license from state of residence. Depending upon area of assignment, may be required to possess a valid license as a Paramedic with the State of Alabama including certification from the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians. City of Mobile – requires possession of current certification as Firefighter I, Firefighter II, and Fire Apparatus Operator: Pumper issued through the Alabama Fire College and Personnel Standards Commission.
