Supervisory Responsibility: Career Firefighter/EMT, Volunteer Firefighter Position Summary:

The Fire Lieutenant performs firefighting and emergency medical patient care and transportation in accordance with State of Alaska guidelines and the department’s rules, policies, and procedures as described but not limited to the department SOPs. This position is also responsible for assisting with the supervision of shift operations in addition to overseeing an assigned company of volunteer members. The Lieutenant may also be responsible for serving as a company officer for a designated apparatus.

Reporting Structure:

Will comply with directives established by a superior officer. Will follow and support the Incident Commander as described in the ICS system during emergency operations. It is expected but not required to function as IC upon arrival to an emergency scene once proper transfer of command has occurred.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

The Fire Lieutenant is responsible for all of the duties of the Career Firefighter/EMT. The following duties are an overview of the primary duties and responsibilities of the Fire Lieutenant and should not be considered an all-inclusive list.

  1. Performs all of the duties of the Career Firefighter/EMT. Responsible for fire suppression and emergency medical care to pre-hospital patients based on level of certification.
  2. Ensures that assigned staff/members are oriented to assigned apparatus.
  3. Will coordinate and disseminate department information to assigned company members.
  4. Will document training activities and participants.
  5. May be designated as Acting Chief of the Department when the Fire Chief is away.
  6. Will maintain all patient information in a confidential manner in accordance with HIPAA regulations.
  7. May recommend disciplinary action of staff to Fire Chief.
  8. Will recommend and identify training needs.
  9. Will work with volunteer members and assist with obtaining Fire Service certifications.

Minimum Qualification and Certification Requirements:

  1. Must meet all of the minimum qualification and certification requirements of the Career Firefighter/EMT.
  2. Possess a current State of Alaska EMT certification in good standing or higher or obtain within 12months.
  3. Must be willing to obtain American Heart Association Basic Life Support Instructor certification withintwelve (12) months of hire.
  4. Possess ProBoard Firefighter I certification and Hazardous Materials Operator certification.
  5. Must be willing to obtain Firefighter II certification
  6. Must be willing to obtain Fire Officer I/Fire Instructor I certification
  7. Must be willing to travel for extended periods of time to attend training

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Firefighter II certification
  2. EMT-2/EMT-3 certification
  3. Fire/Arson Investigator certification.
  4. Experience with Fire Code enforcement

Work Environment and Physical Requirements:

This position requires work in a variety of locations and conditions, including living quarters and office areas, in and around a wide variety of automotive, mechanical, chemical, and medical equipment or supplies, and emergency scenes of every type.

  1. Strenuous physical activity under extreme adverse conditions will be required frequently.
  2. Must be able to lift, move, and carry objects up to one hundred (100) pounds.
  3. This position requires standing, running, walking, sitting, kneeling, stooping, bending, lifting, squatting,pushing, pulling, crawling, jumping, sliding, climbing, pinching, gripping, digging, spraying, reachingover head, reaching away from the body, and repetitive motion.
  4. Will be required to work in all weather conditions and in extreme temperatures.
  5. Work may be performed under dangerous, hazardous, and adverse conditions, including but not limitedto weakened structures, slippery and uneven surfaces, proximity to moving mechanical equipment, burning structures, broken glass or other materials, electrical currents, high places, and confined spaces.
  6. Work may result in exposure to contaminated environments, including but not limited to hazardous materials, smoke, gases, chemicals, fumes, odors, mists, and dusts, which may require the use of Personal Protective Equipment.
  7. Work may result in exposure to individuals or blood-carrying infectious diseases or illnesses, such as Hepatitis A, B, or C, HIV, tuberculosis, smallpox etc.
  8. Work may result in exposure to high noise levels, requiring the wearing of hearing protection.
  9. This position demands the frequent use of sensory activities such as talking, seeing, hearing, smelling,feeling (identifying objects by touch), depth perception and color vision.
  10. This position will involve frequent periods of high physical, mental, and/or emotional stress.
  11. Must have good close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability toadjust focus quickly
  12. Must be able to wear all assigned Personal Protective Equipment.
