Firefighter

NCFD accepts applications all year and are kept on file for one year from submission. When a date for a testing process is selected, applicants on file will be contacted in addition to posting information on social media platforms. All applicants interested in employment with the City of North Charleston must complete the City's employment application form. You can also pick up an Employment Application at the Human Resources Department at City Hall located at 2500 City Hall Lane, North Charleston, SC on the 3rd Floor.

North Charleston Fire Department uses the National Firefighter Selection Test (NFST) as the hiring process written exam. The National Firefighter Selection Test (NFST) is an entry-level basic skills test that helps NCFD select the most qualified applicants by ensuring that candidates possess the basic cognitive skills necessary to successfully perform the job. The NFST is a valid, job-related test designed specifically for use in fire service, which measures these basic skills: Reading Comprehension, Mathematics and Listening Comprehension.

The FPAT is a job simulation physical ability test, designed by IOS in partnership with Firesled Fitness, for assessing essential physical abilities of firefighter applicants and incumbent firefighters. The FPAT consists of a series of tasks designed to assess important physical abilities necessary for effective job performance as a firefighter.

Requirements: 18 years old, valid driver's license, High School Diploma or G.E.D., pass reading skills comprehension exam, pass FPAT (Fireground Physical Ability Test) in under 8 minutes and 31 seconds, pass background check, pass drug screening
