Job Description

The Town of Winterville is seeking a dedicated and experienced professional for the full-time position of Assistant Fire Chief. This role performs difficult professional, administrative, and technical protective service work, directing the daily activities of career and volunteer Firefighters/EMTs. The Assistant Fire Chief works under the general supervision of the Fire Chief to ensure operational readiness, maintain facilities and apparatus, and provide technical expertise during complex emergency operations.

Key Responsibilities
Personnel & Operations: Supervise and evaluate full-time, part-time, and volunteer staff; direct daily work assignments; and manage the readiness of apparatus, equipment, and facilities.
Training & Professional Development: Plan, organize, deliver, and maintain records for comprehensive training programs covering fire suppression, technical rescue, EMS, hazardous materials, health and safety, fire inspection/investigation, community risk reduction, and physical fitness.
Administrative Leadership: Develop and administer task books and serve as the N.C. Fire and Rescue Commission Delivery Agency School Director.
Emergency Response: Assist with technical expertise and equipment operation during high-hazard emergency incidents involving fire, rescue, and EMS.

Working Conditions & Physical Demands
Due to the inherently dangerous nature of emergency services, employees in this class are subject to:
Working in inside and outside environments in extreme hot and cold weather.
Exposure to loud noises, vibrations, fire, smoke, odors, mists, oils, chemicals, and bodily fluids.
Compliance with OSHA standards regarding bloodborne pathogens.
Regular use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), including SCBA (Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus).

Requirements: Fire Officer III certification, NFPA Firefighter certification, Emergency Vehicle Driver and Driver Operator/Pumps certifications, North Carolina EMT Basic certification, Hazardous Materials Operations Level I, Fire Inspector I certification (within one year), valid Class B North Carolina driver's license, graduation from community college with fire science degree or equivalent experience

Salary: $76,930 – $115,390 (Dependent on Qualifications)
