General Definition of Work
Performs intermediate protective service work driving fire apparatus and operating pumps and related rescue equipment, performing fire inspections, presenting fire prevention programs, maintaining equipment and facilities, continuing training and instruction, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the moderate supervision of the Fire Lieutenant/Inspector I and Fire Lieutenant/Inspector II. Limited supervision is exercised over part-time personnel in the absence of the shift supervisor.

Examples of Duties Essential Functions
Responds to alarms; drives assigned apparatus to required location. Operates pumps and apparatus at fire scene. Performs firefighting activities including laying hose, using ropes for rescue, lifting and raising ladders and other equipment, performing fire extinguishment, containment, ventilation and salvage work, and extrication of entrapped patients involved in motor vehicle crashes; assists with hazardous materials tasks. Assists in maintaining fire apparatus and equipment, and cleaning fire station and grounds. Receives emergency and non-emergency calls for assistance; processes and prioritizes incoming calls; dispatches fire and rescue personnel; maintains dispatch logs. Checks fire hydrant flows and performs light maintenance. Assists in the inspection of new and existing buildings for compliance with state and local fire and life safety codes; assists in pre-fire planning activities; maintains records and files and prepares reports. Conducts station tours for the public; demonstrates life safety concepts. Participates in drills and physical training; takes part in training sessions on techniques, use of equipment and related matters including personal safety, use of proper protective clothing and equipment; maintains physical fitness and readiness to perform under prolonged and arduous conditions. Completes any other duties assigned by Supervisor. Provides excellent customer service when working with citizens, elected officials, and/or associates. Supports the overall City organization by executing the directives as set forth by the immediate supervisor and elected officials.

Typical Qualifications
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
General knowledge of firefighting techniques, procedures and mechanics as applied to fire suppression and pump operation; general knowledge of the street system, major buildings and physical layout of the City; general knowledge of the operation and maintenance of firefighting equipment and apparatus and ability to operate such equipment and apparatus safely and effectively; ability to work at heights and in confined spaces; ability to exercise sound judgment in emergency situations; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, law enforcement and emergency services representatives and the general public.

Education and Experience
High school diploma or GED and moderate experience in fire suppression supplemented by equipment operation experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Physical Requirements
The work requires the regular exertion of up to 10 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 25 pounds of force and occasional exertion of over 100 pounds of force; work regularly requires standing, walking, speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel and reaching with hands and arms, frequently requires pushing or pulling and lifting and occasionally requires sitting, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, tasting or smelling and repetitive motions; work requires close vision, distance vision, ability to adjust focus, depth perception, color perception, night vision and peripheral vision, vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts within arms length, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work regularly requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions, frequently requires working near moving mechanical parts, working in high, precarious places, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to extreme heat (non-weather), wearing a self contained breathing apparatus and exposure to blood borne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment and occasionally requires wet, humid conditions (non-weather), exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to extreme cold (non-weather), exposure to the risk of electrical shock, working with explosives and exposure to vibration; work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. grounds maintenance, heavy traffic).

Special Requirements
Valid driver's license with class B endorsement in the State of North Carolina
