Firefighter

The City of Oneonta accepts applications for Firefighter on a year-round basis. A special recruitment program has been adopted by the City of Oneonta Civil Service Commission for appointment of candidates to the position of Firefighter. Currently, one written exams is scheduled by New York State Civil Service during the first quarter of each year. Candidates who meet the qualifications and pass the exam will have their names placed on the Firefighter Continuous Recruitment eligible list in the order of final scores, regardless of the date on which they filed or took the test. Generally, the names of qualified candidates will remain on the list for two (2) years.

To apply, a completed application may be submitted to the Human Resources Department in person or via mail any time throughout the year. To be eligible for a specific holding, an application must be received at least thirty days prior to the written exam date. Any application received fewer than thirty days from a scheduled written exam date will be processed for a subsequent holding.

To be eligible for appointment, a candidate must be reachable on the eligible list established as a result of the written exam and must successfully pass the subsequent physical ability test. The physical ability test may be administered at any time after the holding of a written exam, even before the scores for that holding are received from the state. The alternate test date policy, as stated on the exam announcement for the written test, applies to both the written exam and physical agility test.

A candidate who is reachable on the list and passes the agility test will be eligible for an interview. After the interview process, select candidates will receive a conditional job offer. Those candidates then must satisfactorily pass background, psychological, medical, and drug screenings before being officially appointed.
