Job Description
The Fire Engineer position is responsible for the safe operation, maintenance, and inspection of fire apparatus and emergency response vehicles. This position supports fire suppression, emergency medical, and special operations activities by ensuring firefighting equipment is operational and responding safely and efficiently to emergency incidents. In addition, the Fire Engineer may serve in a lead capacity by directing assigned personnel and overseeing company-level activities in the absence of a company officer. The position helps protect life and property while ensuring compliance with departmental policies, procedures, and safety standards.
Duties and Responsibilities
Safely operate emergency response vehicles during emergency and non-emergency operations.
Position apparatus appropriately to support firefighting, rescue, EMS, and special operations incidents.
Operate pumps, aerial devices, generators, lighting equipment, and other apparatus-mounted systems.
Establish and maintain water supply operations from hydrants, static water sources, and relay pumping systems.
Maintain knowledge of response districts, hydrant locations, target hazards, and pre-incident plans.
Conduct daily, weekly, and monthly inspections of vehicles, apparatus, equipment, and tools.
Perform routine maintenance, testing, and minor repairs on apparatus and firefighting equipment.
Ensure all apparatus and equipment are maintained in a state of operational readiness.
Complete vehicle inspection reports, maintenance records, and equipment inventories.
Report equipment deficiencies, maintenance needs, and safety concerns promptly.
Respond to fire, rescue, hazardous materials, medical, and other emergency incidents.
Assist in fire suppression, search and rescue, ventilation, salvage, overhaul, and recovery operations.
Operate firefighting and rescue equipment in accordance with departmental procedures.
Support incident command objectives and maintain accountability during emergency operations.
Follow all safety policies and risk management practices while operating at emergency scenes.
Provide day-to-day leadership and guidance to assigned personnel during routine operations and
emergency responses.
Direct company activities and supervise crew assignments when functioning as the acting company officer.
Ensure personnel adhere to departmental policies, procedures, and safety regulations.
Participate in training, mentoring, and development of firefighters and recruits.
Conduct station drills and assist with maintaining crew competency and preparedness.
Monitor personnel performance and communicate operational concerns to supervisory staff.
Assist with pre-incident planning, company inspections, and fire prevention activities.
Coordinate station duties, housekeeping assignments, and equipment accountability.
Promote teamwork, professionalism, and effective communication among crew members.
Support incident management by providing reports, status updates, and resource information to command staff.
Complete incident reports, apparatus logs, inspection forms, and other required documentation.
Participate in drills, continuing education, and department training programs.
Assist with public education events, fire prevention programs, and community outreach initiatives.
Represent the department professionally in interactions with the public, allied agencies, and stakeholders.
Requirements
- 3-5 years fire department experience and 1-3 years experience as a Fire Engineer or Driver/Operator
- Certifications: AHA CPR/AED, NC EMT, NC EVD, NC Firefighter, NC Hazmat Ops, NC D/O Pumps, NIMS - IS 100.c, IS 200.c and IS 700.b - Reciprocity Accepted
- NC Class B Driver License within 6 months of employment and NC D/O Aerials within 1 year of employment.
