Fire Engineer

Description The City of Brevard is seeking a dedicated Fire Engineer to join our Fire Department. This is a full-time position working rotating 24-hour shifts. Nestled in the heart of Western North Carolina's Blue Ridge Mountains, Brevard offers the chance to serve a close-knit community while advancing your career in the fire service. This position participates in the operations of fire suppression, rescue and incident response, and operations at the fire station. The Fire Engineer takes part in incident response—including emergency medical service, operation of fire apparatus, firefighting, and the maintenance of equipment and facilities—as well as fire suppression and emergency response training. Examples of Duties Operates assigned apparatus, equipment, and vehicles for emergency and nonemergency calls, routine inspections, training drills, and other purposes as necessary. Inspects, maintains, and makes minor repairs to apparatus, equipment, and vehicles. Ensures the cleanliness, serviceability, and availability of firefighting and emergency equipment, tools, and supplies related to assigned apparatus. Operates pumps and other equipment at fire scenes; uses pump control and raises and lowers ladders. Performs the duties of Emergency Medical Technician as necessary. Assists in fire suppression, rescue, forced entry, ventilation, and salvage; lays and connects hoses, manipulates nozzles, climbs ladders; assists in the ventilation of structures. Performs vehicle extrications. Performs fire prevention activities; assists with station tours, and fire education programs. Provides hazardous materials response as needed. Performs maintenance and testing of city fire hydrants. Assists with the preparation of fire and incident reports; participates in special projects as required. Prepares and submits reports as required. Performs daily station and grounds maintenance. Responds to emergency calls as an emergency medical responder, performs necessary rescue work; administers necessary emergency medical care. Responds to non-emergency calls, such as requests to assist other emergency medical care providers in moving patients into transportation vehicles and assisting disabled persons in their homes when other assistance is inadequate. Participates in a continuous training program to improve competence in fire fighting as well as medical technical work, and in emergency vehicle maintenance and operation; studies street and road patterns and networks in the City so that future runs may be made with minimum difficulty and delay. Participates in continuous training program to improve competence in responding to a hazardous materials incident. Participates in pre-fire planning for businesses and multi-family residences. Utilizes specialized hand-and power-tools in rescuing victims in fire, disaster and other emergencies. ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS May perform other advanced rescue activities as certified. May assist with traffic control duties as required. May teach training classes to subordinate firefighters. May maintain inventory of supplies and equipment. May fill in for supervisory positions as required. Performs related work as required. Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Graduation from high school supplemented by completion of courses and seminars in fire service; and considerable experience in the fire service; or an equivalent combination of experience and education. Special Requirements Possession of a valid Class B or CDL Class B Driver's License for the type of equipment operated. NC Certified Firefighter Level II NC Emergency Medical Technician Basic NC Certified Rescue Technician (Vehicle Machinery Rescue) Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Considerable knowledge of modern methods of attacking fire emergencies and of the use and maintenance of firefighting apparatus and equipment. Knowledge of laws and regulations relating to the control and prevention of fires. Knowledge of department and city policies and procedures and federal, state, and local laws and regulations. Knowledge of the streets and layout as well as the boundaries and geography of the city. Ability to operate all department equipment and apparatus. Ability to perform mathematical calculations necessary in pump operations. Ability to maintain effective working relationships with other members of the department, other City Departments, other agencies, the public and to speak effectively before groups of in public educational situations. Ability to make sound judgements in emergency situations. Skill in operating computers and other office equipment. Skill in operating emergency apparatus, vehicles and equipment. Skill in the use of radio/communications equipment. Skill in the provision of basic life support techniques.
