Job Description
The City of North St. Paul is currently accepting applications for Paid-On-Call Firefighters. This position is ideal for individuals who want to serve their community, whether you have no prior experience or already hold fire service certifications.
Position Overview
Paid-on-call firefighters respond to a wide range of emergency and non-emergency incidents, including fires, medical calls, accidents, and public safety situations. Members of the department play a critical role in protecting the lives and property of residents, businesses, and visitors. In addition to emergency response, firefighters support the community through fire prevention, inspections, investigations, and public education programs. Protects life and property by performing firefighting, emergency aid, hazardous materials, and fire prevention duties. Maintains fire equipment, apparatus, and facilities. Works under the general supervision of the Fire Chief, receives task supervision from all Chief Officers and Team Leaders.
Schedule
There is no set schedule; you are called in to respond to emergencies and attend meetings and training events as required.
Minimum Requirements
Applicants must:
Must be at least 18 years old.
High school diploma or GED equivalent.
Current, valid MN Driver's License
Must have a (10) minute response time to our station located at 2400 Margaret Street in North Saint Paul, MN 55109 from your primary residence.
No felony convictions or disqualifying criminal histories.
Preferred (not required):
Firefighter I & II certification
EMT certification
Fire-related or technical college coursework
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Skills to communicate with a variety of individuals and handle a variety of customer service situations. Basic knowledge of building construction and electrical wiring. Ability to use various office equipment and software programs. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, citizen commissions, council members, staff from other public agencies, and citizens. Ability to maintain physical fitness and perform the duties of a firefighter. Ability to act effectively in emergency and stressful situations. Ability to follow verbal and written instructions. Ability to maintain strict confidentiality.
Physical Demands
Physical demands include: standing, walking, sitting, reaching with hands and arms, climbing, crouching, kneeling, or crawling. The employee must be able to regularly lift and/or move up to 100 pounds and perform all functions of a firefighter.
Training & Certification
No experience? No problem. New hires without certifications will receive paid training through the department, including: Firefighter I & II, Hazardous Materials (HazMat), Emergency Medical training. All training hours are compensated. Firefighters are paid monthly for calls, training, and drills.
