Volunteer Firefighter

Becoming a Volunteer Fire Fighter: Applicants for fire fighter must be at least 18 years old, live or work within 5 miles of the fire station, express an interest in community service, pass a physical exam, and be willing to achieve the required training standards. All applicants are subject to background review. Contact the Fire Department office for an application.

About The Elk Rapids Fire Department: The Elk Rapids Fire Department serves the residents of both the Village and Township of Elk Rapids. The staff provides fire suppression, rescue, fire safety, and other urgent services to the community. The station is located next to Village and Township Government Building at 209 Bridge St.

Staffing: The Fire Department is staffed by 1 full time fire fighter and about 20 paid on call volunteers. All are fully trained to the Michigan mandated standards. Fire fighters respond to about 150 calls per year. Your fire department also provides mutual aid support to other surrounding townships.

Equipment: The Fire Department operates 2 engines (pumpers), 1 tanker, 1 rescue truck, 1 utility truck, and a rescue boat.
