GTMESA firefighters are represented by IAFF Local 5288, reflecting our shared commitment to professionalism, collaboration, and strong labor-management partnership.

Fire suppression personnel work within three shift rotations, Red, Green, and Blue, maintaining an average daily staffing level of 10 firefighters dedicated to serving around the clock.

To be considered for a Firefighter position, applicants must currently hold the following certifications and licenses:
- Michigan Firefighter I/II Certification
- HazMat Operations Level Certification
- EVOC Certification
- Michigan EMT-B License

While GTMESA does not have residency requirements, preference may be given to firefighters who live within our response area.

Next Orientation Spring 2027

The medical evaluation will be conducted by GTMESA's designated physician through Munson Occupational Medicine and will be completed in accordance with NFPA 1582: Standard on Comprehensive Occupational Medical Program for Fire Departments. As part of this process, the physician will also determine whether the applicant is medically fit to wear a respirator in accordance with GTMESA's Respiratory Protection Plan. The evaluation is assessed on a pass/fail basis, and results will be provided to GTMESA. The exam may include and is not limited to:
- Pre-employment drug screen
- Lab work (i.e. Cholesterol, Triglycerides, etc.)
- OSHA Respirator Medical Evaluation
- Physical Exam
- X-Ray (i.e. chest/back)
- Pulmonary Function Testing
- EKG

Requirements: Michigan Firefighter I/II Certification, HazMat Operations Level Certification, EVOC Certification, Michigan EMT-B License
