Volunteer Firefighter/EMT

The Bethesda Chevy Chase Rescue Squad is always looking to add dedicated volunteers to help support our mission. Whether you're a seasoned veteran of the fire/ems service, or just starting out, there is a place for you in our family.

Operational membership with BCCRS will require you to perform the following essential job tasks: Must be able to direct and handle emergency and stressful situations; Must be able to focus without interruption for an hour or more, particularly in surroundings with many distractions; Must be able to walk over uneven ground, and be able to lift, carry, and pull materials of varying types and weights, including disabled or bedridden patients or other items, 50 pounds or less without assistance, and 51 pounds or greater with assistance; must also have the stamina and endurance to repeatedly bend, lift and kneel in uncomfortable positions throughout their work shifts; Must be able to visually monitor patients, including checking pupils or other physical signs, read protocols and medication labels, read and adjust gauges and other controls on medical equipment; Must be able to speak, read, write, and effectively communicate medical information in English utilizing the medical vocabulary of an Emergency Medical Technician; Must be able to communicate by using radio equipment and must be able to hear and speak clearly and distinctly, especially when excited and under stress; Must be able to listen for monitor alarms, emergency signals, breathing and heartbeats, often in noisy, chaotic, and/or disaster scenes. Must be able to travel to and gain access to emergency scenes in a moving vehicle, sometimes without external cues as to location or direction of travel; Must be able to work with or in the vicinity of potentially hazardous geographical locations, building structures, equipment, and materials; May be exposed to infectious diseases, such as COVID-19, while wearing personal protective equipment (PPE).

Requirements: No formal training required for new members (training required for live-in applicants); English language skills; ability to perform essential job tasks including lifting, carrying, emergency response, and patient care
