Monterey - Per Diem Firefighter / EMT

The Monterey Fire Department is accepting applications for the positions of Per Diem Firefighter/EMT. The position reports to the fire chief and consists of shifts 0600 – 1800 with shifts scheduled during the weekend and various weekdays as needed. A weekend shift will consist of (1) Officer (1) Firefighter/EMT and (1) Firefighter. The positions will be open until filled. The department operates from a single station, equipped with a ladder truck, engine/tanker, squad and a boat. While a multi-year staffing plan is in progress, the department currently is staffed by a full-time fire chief, deputy fire chief and firefighter/EMT, 14 Per-Diem and 3 resident call/volunteer firefighters. The department also provides mutual aid to nearby communities and serves as the Rapid Intervention Team (RIT) for the towns of Great Barrington and Lee. In 2025, the department responded to approximately 330 incidents including mutual-aid and auto-aid of which 20 were fires (structure and wildland) and 24 motor vehicle accidents. 2026 has been busy with 14 Structure Fires from January 1st to May 28th.

Responsibilities
- Fire Suppression
- Fire Prevention
- Emergency Medical Services (expected to lead EMS Patient Care & complete Patient Care Reports)
- Maintenance of department equipment, apparatus, station & facility grounds
- Administrative support
- Other duties assigned by the chief

Compensation
- Per-Diem Firefighter/EMT: $30/hour. A $5 per hour bonus will be applied to members who complete a minimum of 1 paid/call night shift per week.
- This is not a benefited position

Requirements: 18 years old or older, Valid Motor Vehicle License, Firefighting Experience, Firefighter I/II (Not Required but Preferred), CPR Certification, EMS Experience (Not Required but Preferred), Ability to Drive and Pump fire apparatus, Massachusetts EMT-B Certification

Salary: $30/hour to $35/hour
