Firefighter

Firefighters are hired by the Board of Fire and Police Commissioners through a series of physical aptitude test, written examination and oral examination. An eligibility list is established every two years, and candidates are hired from the list as vacancies occur. Starting salary is $66,473.63 with step increases yearly for the first five years.

Requirements: Residency within 30 mile radius of main fire station, mental aptitude test, physical ability (CPAT), oral interview, psychological evaluation, background investigation, medical examination. Preference points awarded for: military service with honorable discharge, Associate's degree in fire-related field or Bachelor's degree, valid Paramedic license, valid EMT-B license, or prior firefighter employment for 2+ years
