Firefighting is a career unlike any other—challenging, dynamic, demanding, and deeply rewarding. It is more than simply a job; it is a commitment to serve others, often when they are experiencing the worst day of their lives.

The Idaho Falls Fire Department is an all-hazards emergency services organization serving a growing and diverse region of Eastern Idaho. Our members respond to more than 17,000 calls annually across approximately 350 square miles, protecting the residents and visitors of Idaho Falls and providing emergency services throughout surrounding Bonneville County communities. One shift may include medical emergencies, structure fires, vehicle accidents, technical rescues, hazardous materials incidents, and countless other calls for service.

Every IFFD firefighter is trained as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), and approximately 60 members are licensed paramedics. Our members also have opportunities to participate in specialized teams including Bicycle Response Team, Fire Investigations Team, Regional Hazardous Materials Team, Idaho Technical Search & Rescue Team, and Swift Water Rescue Team.

Minimum Qualifications: At least 18 years of age by test date. High School Diploma or equivalent. A valid Driver's License. Successful candidates must pass a medical examination and background check (after a contingent offer of employment).

Testing Deadline: October 25, 2026. The cut-off date for all written exams (remote or in-person) is on or before 10/25/2026. After the written exam, Public Safety Testing will supply the City of Idaho Falls with a list of top candidates. Initial Interviews and Physical Agility Test: November 8, 2026 will be a physical agility practice day and November 9 & 10, 2026 will be the physical agility test and November 9th-11th will be the initial interviews. The Physical Agility Test is the Combat Challenge and must be completed in under 7 minutes to pass. Final Interviews will be conducted the week of November 30th through December 2nd, 2026. Hired candidates will start in January 11, 2027.

Salary: Probationary Firefighters start at $18.40 per/hr. $53,580.80 annually. Move to $19.19 per/hr. $55,881.28 after 6 months. Move to $20.49 per/hr. $59,666.88 annually after 12 months. Personnel also receive a clothing allowance of $1,150.00 and 96 hours of holiday pay annually.
