Fire Chief

JOB TITLE: Fire Chief DEPARTMENT: Fire Deparatment SUPERVISOR: City Manager PREPARED BY: City of Camilla DATE: August 2017 SUMMARY: Employee in this position performs responsible administrative and supervisory work in the protection of lives and property. Employee is the Chief Firefighting Official of the City. Supervise 10-25 employees and is responsible to the City Manager. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The distinguishing features and some specific examples of the duties of the position include: planning, organizing, assigning and directing departmental operations in regards to equipment apparatus and personnel; prepares and maintains fire records and reports to secure efficient operation in meeting service demands and to maintain compliance with authorized requests for information regarding departmental activities and personnel; responds to general and major fire alarms and personally directs firefighting activities through subordinate officers; represents the Fire Department in Public matters; attends such professional conferences and conventions as necessary to keep the best of modern and contemporary firefighting methods and administration; establishes and maintains performance standards for the department, approves these schedules, and certifies other required records; provides analysis and recommendations pertaining to operation, procedures, function and organization of the Fire Department, maintains apparatus, prepares and recommends annual budget; purchases departmental supplies; performs other duties as required. GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS: Ability to perform under general operating standards and provide a high level of planning and ingenuity; ability to deal fairly with the public, other agencies, subordinates and superiors; comprehensive knowledge of the use and operation of a wide variety of fire motor and auxiliary apparatus; thorough knowledge of laws, rules and regulations relating to fire control and fire prevention; thorough knowledge of the geography of the City including the location of principle buildings; ability to maintain discipline and respect of subordinates, ability to lead and command effectively in the instruction of property and equipment; ability to plan, initiate and carry out long term programs in Fire Department administration, employee training and fire prevention; available to work varied shifts. MINIMUM EXPERIENCE: Must be a high school graduate or equivalent with 5 years previous responsible supervisory experience as a State of Georgia Certified Firefighter; possess and maintain valid Georgia Certified Firefighter; possess and maintain valid Georgia Driver's License, meet and maintain the requisites of the Georgia Firefighting Training council; or, any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the knowledge, skill and ability to perform the duties of the position as outlined.
