Job Description

Assists the Fire Marshal in planning, coordinating and conducting a comprehensive inspection program for compliance with the Connecticut Fire Safety Code and Town ordinances and regulations. Performs fire investigations and promotes public fire education programs. Provides technical assistance to the volunteer fire department and participates in site plan reviews. Assumes responsibility for the office in the temporary absence of the Fire Marshal.

Examples of Essential Job Duties:
Assists in the formulation and implementation of a program of on-going fire inspections within the Town of Hamden and coordinates same with the Training and Fire Suppression divisions; with the Training Division assists in the formulation and implementation of an on-going program within the Town of Hamden; inspects all buildings and facilities of public service and all codes; reports any infractions of state and local fire codes immediately to the Fire Marshal and takes whatever appropriate action is authorized as required; assists in investigating fires to determine origin and loss; assists in inspecting holders of dynamite permits and licenses; assists in performing inspections of convalescent homes and nursery schools; in the absence of the Fire Marshal, shall be authorized to issue those permits, licenses, and other such documents which require the approval of the local fire inspection authority; performs related duties as required or delegated by the Fire Marshal, Fire Chief or Deputy Fire Chief. The Deputy Fire Marshal assists the Fire Marshal in the supervision of Fire Inspectors and Firefighters assigned to the Marshal's office.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Considerable knowledge of modern fire investigative techniques; considerable knowledge of state and or local fire safety codes; knowledge of modern fire safety prevention and protection practices; knowledge of safety practices in public buildings and place of public assembly; ability to read and interpret regulations and procedures; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fire department officers and personnel, outside agencies and general public is essential.

Environmental/Special Conditions:
Employees in this classification are required to perform heavy manual labor under conditions of extreme personal hazard and under conditions of extreme discomfort due to heat, smoke, cold, etc.; the individual appointed to this position must hold certification as a Fire Marshal by the State of Connecticut or within a prescribed period of time after entering this classification, the employee shall complete the required training and instruction, leading to certification as a Fire Marshal by the State of Connecticut and shall be so certified. Failure to receive or maintain such certification will result in removal from this position.

Examination Process:
Promotional examinations will be administered pursuant to the Rules and Regulations of the Civil Service Commission. Seniority credits will be added in accordance with Rule 7 of the Civil Service Rules and Regulations. Note: This is a staff position and an individual serving in this capacity will maintain their permanent Civil Service rank. Such permanent Civil Service rank will determine eligibility for future promotional examinations.

Requirements: 5 years continuous active service with career fire department, Fire Lieutenant or Fire Inspector rank or above, valid Connecticut motor vehicle operator's license, Fire Marshal certification by State of Connecticut (required or must obtain within prescribed period), Associates Degree in Fire Engineering, Fire Science or related field preferred

Salary: $118,419.96 Annually
