Reserve Firefighter

Under the supervision of a command officer, participate in firefighting activities through the use of hoses, ladders and other firefighting equipment. After completing probationary training, conduct firefighting operations in environments that could be immediately dangerous to life and health. Assist in providing emergency medical services and other related work as required.

Respond to fire, emergency rescue, first aid and public service calls. Deploy hose lines for direct and indirect fire suppression activities in a variety of environments including structure, wildland and hazardous material fires. Raise, lower, and climb ladder, conduct fire ground operations while working from elevated positions. Conduct salvage, overhaul and clean-up operations at incident locations and the fire station. As a member of an emergency crew, provide emergency medical treatment through the use of medical equipment, procedures and interventions. Use personal protective equipment and self-contained breathing apparatus in multiple environments, clean and maintain that assigned equipment. Participate in training sessions and maintain proficiency with all aspects required of a reserve firefighter. Assist in the maintenance of clean and orderly conditions with fire apparatus and the firehouse.

Special Requirements:
• Possess and maintain an appropriate California Driver's License.
• Maintain year round residency in the City of Avalon.
• Shall be required to respond to fire and emergency calls as requested or required.
• Maintain professional grooming standards consistent with firefighting personnel.

Positions assigned to this class are established for temporary, intermittent, part-time or voluntary employees or used for training purposes for regular employment. The incumbent assists in conducting fire suppression activities, providing emergency medical care, performing rescue operations, maintaining fire station and safety equipment.
