Job Description
The Assistant Fire Chief performs a variety of responsible management, technical, and administrative work in commanding and coordinating emergency incidents including fire suppression, emergency medical services, hazardous material services, fire prevention, staff training and apparatus maintenance. This position reports directly to the Public Safety Chief and may serve as Acting Public Safety Chief in his/her absence. The base annual salary for the Assistant Fire Chief is $69,380-$105,132. This position is eligible for overtime.
The City provides the following benefits:
General Leave:
Vacation: 3.69 hours accrued/pay period in first year, increasing to 4.62 in years 1-5, 5.23 in years 5-10, 6.15 in years 10-15, 7.69 in years 15-20, and 9.23 for 20+ years
Sick Leave: Accrue 12 hours per month with Sick Leave conversion program to convert unused sick leave to vacation
Holidays: 14 paid holidays per year
Medical, Dental, & Vision Insurance: 90/10 plan provided through Anthem Blue Cross as well as Dental and Vision coverage. The policy covers employee, spouses, and any eligible dependents, with the current employee contribution of $30 per month.
Term Life Insurance: $15,000 with Health Coverage and $25,000 additional
Retirement: The City participates in the California Public Employees’ Retirement System (CalPERS). For legacy members, the benefit level is 3% @50. For new members, the benefit level is 2.7% @57.
Deferred Compensation: voluntary plans available
IRS Section 125 Flexible Benefit Plan available
Requirements
- Qualifications:
- REQUIRED Licenses/Certificates:
- High school diploma or GED equivalent;
- Possession of California Class C driver’s license with Firefighter Endorsement “F” or higher driver’s license class;
- California Chief Fire Officer certification or ability to complete certification coursework within twelve (12) months of appointment and ability to complete certification within eighteen (18) months;
- Possession of California State Fire Training Fire Officer or Company Officer, or its equivalent;
- Current California EMT-B or ability to obtain within twelve (12) months of appointment;
- California State P.C. 832 A or ability to obtain within twelve (12) months of appointment.
- Preferred qualifications:
- Equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in fire science, fire administration or a closely related field;
- Five (5) years of increasingly responsible municipal fire suppression and prevention experience, including at least three (3) years of command experience at the Fire Captain level.
- College teaching credentials are desirable.

- The Susanville Fire Department’s critical functions may require employees to respond during emergencies or urgent situations within a reasonable time and therefore its employees are subject to the city of Susanville residency policy.
