Job Summary/Scope
Under immediate supervision, attends the Fire academy to receive instruction designed to qualify trainees to obtain the necessary certifications and licensures to serve as a Firefighter. This is a trainee-level classification and incumbents are expected to successfully complete the Fire academy, receive the recommendation of the Fire Chief and promote to Firefighter as a condition of continued employment.
Examples of Duties & Responsibilities:
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Participates in and conducts numerous types of training activities covering all phases of operations associated with the Fire Department, including attendance at respective state, regional, and local schools and seminars, as required to become a Firefighter.
Assists other City Departments and citizens as necessary.
Other Duties and Responsibilities
Participates in all training activities and public relations programs as assigned.
Performs all other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities, Materials & Equipment, Working Environment/Physical Requirements:
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Skills in performing mechanical and physical tasks.
Knowledge of City geography, principles of building construction, and basic first aid and life support.
Knowledge of hazardous materials.
Ability to react quickly and effectively, and to cope with stressful situations and function effectively in fire ground activities.
Skills in interpersonal communications. Must be able to understand and follow oral and written instructions, and establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
Valid Driver's License required.
Must meet all qualifications, except licensing, stated in job descriptions and required to serve as a Firefighter.
Material and Equipment Directly Used
Uses, and trains to use, equipment for the Firefighter position. There may be times when use of personal vehicle may be required.
Working Environment/Physical Requirements
Work is performed in a training setting under the same conditions, and with the same physical requirements, as a Firefighter.
Education:
Education
High school diploma or equivalent required.
Passing of a drug screening required prior to appointment.
