We are seeking a Mechanic with strong diagnostic and repair skills who will operate with a large degree of autonomy in their own bay at our new Municipal Services Facility on Highland Ave in The City of South Portland! This is a Full Time, fully benefit eligible (including for full family health insurance) non-exempt position, working 40 hours per week. The position is responsible for the diagnosis and maintenance of the Fire Department?s fleet of vehicles and small engines, including; SUVs, Pickups, ambulances, pumpers, foam units, aerial ladders, and a variety of small equipment. Will perform repairs as appropriate and assist with recommendations to refer complex repairs to contracted service providers. We will support the continuing education for the right applicant with solid mechanical skills, including to be an Emergency Vehicle Technician in our Fire Department. Position requires managing and maintaining effective preventive maintenance programs, safety programs, parts inventory and utilization of fleet maintenance software. The selected candidate will work under the supervision of the Deputy Fire Chief of Logistics and will be able to consult with and access other co-located professional mechanics staffing other city departments.

The Fire Mechanic will maintain and repair engines, transmissions, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, air brakes, air systems, pumps, valves etc. Must be able to keep accurate records and be responsible to document work performed, and parts utilized, using our Fleet Management System. Applicants must have the ability to weld, cut, fabricate, and inspect Fire Department vehicles and equipment as required to pass Maine State Vehicle Inspection. The Fire Mechanic must be available to report to work during emergency situations and/or snow storms, ice storms, or other weather-related emergencies as deemed necessary by the Fire Chief/EMA director.

Graduation from high school or equivalency, and two (2) years post-secondary technical education in an appropriate field, with two (2) years of progressive experience, or three (3) years of progressive experience in vehicle and heavy equipment repair are required. Willing to train the right candidate to obtain a valid State of Maine Class B commercial driver?s license ? which must be obtained within 6 months of hire. State of Maine Motor Vehicle inspection license to include A, D, E and T classifications are required within six months of hire as well. Fabrication skills with electric and acetylene welding experience preferred. Preference will be given to applicants with EVT Certification. Applicants without current EVT certification for fire apparatus and ambulances will be required to obtain EVT certification within 1 year of hire and we will support this training. Must be comfortable with computerized maintenance software used by the Department. Must be able to establish positive working relationships and demonstrate knowledge of, and adherence to, safety programs. The Fire Mechanic II must possess their own tools to adequately perform work on the Fire Department Fleet. An annual tool allowance will assist with specialized tools.

Starting pay is $43,035.20 to $56,596.80 annualized ($20.69 ? 27.21 per hour) depending on experience, and the Mechanic is eligible for possible merit increases, in addition to annual wage increases as may be approved by the City Council.
