DEFINITION OF POSITION:
Under the general supervision of the Battalion Chief, is responsible for performing
fire fighting, rescue, emergency and non-emergency medical service activities in the protection of life and property throughout Brown County and the City of Aberdeen; Performs related work as required.
Responsible for and must have the motility to perform all duties of Firefighter such
as fighting destructive fires and other declared emergencies involving structures, aircraft, vehicles, timber grasslands, flammable liquids, electrical apparatus, chemical compounds and other combustible materials; Operates all types of hand and vehicular fire fighting and emergency rescue equipment; Able to operate communication and rescue equipment; Performs routine cleaning, servicing, and maintenance operations on vehicles, equipment, fire station and station premises; Follow all station policies prescribed by standard operating procedures as listed on bulletin boards or passed down by the Chief; Responsible for being knowledgeable of all roads, streets and buildings within Brown County and the City of Aberdeen, also for any street changes or road closures; Assists with public information and education programs concerned with public safety; Attends inservice training sessions; Responsible for all emergency and non-emergency care of patient(s); Proper knowledge and use of all emergency equipment and proper procedures and protocol as prescribed by local hospital Emergency Department staff; Check and maintain equipment and supplies on ambulances daily; Daily radio check to local Emergency Departments; Check main and portable oxygen tanks to make sure they are full; Restock all supplies and equipment used after each run; Clean blood, body fluids, dirt, mud, etc. off equipment after use; Maintain and keep EMT recertification hours, training, and EMT booklets up to date; Complete and maintain medical trip reports accurately; Keep and maintain accurate records of fire alarm; Dispatch nearest fire hydrant to the fire scene for trucks; Works directly with the public and co-workers and tactfully handles questions, concerns or complaints properly; Follows written and oral rapport with all departments, businesses and general public; Must handle stressful situations tactfully and follow oral and written instructions; Future advanced training will be mandatory to maintain position; Perform other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge, skill and ability to carry out effective principles and methods of all fire
suppression, prevention and emergency medical services; Able to conduct good, tactful communications and public relations under difficult and stressful situations; Ability to instruct the public, research and answer questions and concerns. Ability to work in confined spaces and heights.
Graduation from high school or possession of a GED, successful completion of a South Dakota recognized Emergency Medical Technician program; Must possess and maintain a valid South Dakota driver?s license. All applicants are required to pass a written test, background check, interview process and physical examination. Selected candidates must not smoke or use any type of tobacco product in any form on or off duty. Aberdeen Fire Department subscribes to random drug testing procedures. Applicants must remain physically fit to perform all required duties.
Must be and maintain an Emergency Medical Technician certificate. Firefighter
certification must be obtained within two (2) years of employment and any other licenses or certifications required by law or Fire Department regulations.
Must reside within a 15-mile radius of the Aberdeen City Hall.
