Job Description Summary
Perform fire suppression and emergency response work responding to citizen calls for emergency assistance due to fires and other crisis situations.
Essential Job Functions
Respond to situations involving the destruction of property and potential loss of life such as fires, accidents, hazardous materials, and emergency medical and rescue incidents.
Operate a variety of fire suppression and emergency medical equipment.
Clean and maintain all apparatus, tools, equipment, and the fire station.
Ancillary Job Functions
Inspect businesses for hazards and fire code violations.
Establish and maintain good working relationships with community groups and agencies.
Provide public education on fire prevention and safety.
Perform related duties as assigned.

Education and Experience - An equivalent combination of education, training and experience will be considered
High school diploma or equivalent.
Successful completion of assigned Columbia Missouri Fire Academy training program within probationary period.
Must maintain a valid driver?s license.
Must obtain CPR certification, EMT license, and Firefighter I and II certification within probationary period. Maintenance of CPR certification and EMT license are requirements for continued employment.
Employees hired after October 1, 2019, are required to maintain a permanent residence within a thirty-five (35) mile radius of Fire Station 1, 201 Orr St., Columbia, Mo 65201 within 180 days of hire.
Members hired prior to October 1, 2019, living outside a thirty-five (35) mile radius of Fire Station 1, 201 Orr St., Columbia, Mo 65201, may not move their permanent residence to a location that is further than their current residence, as provided to the City as of October 1, 2019.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities which may be representative, but not all-inclusive of those commonly associated with this position
Knowledge of fire suppression and first responder methods, practices, and techniques.
Knowledge of fire and emergency response equipment operation and maintenance.
Knowledge of safety standards and precautions pertaining to the use and operation of fire equipment, fire suppression, and first responder activities.
Ability to lift and carry ladders, hoses, and other emergency equipment while wearing protective clothing/equipment including breathing apparatus.
Ability to work in cramped spaces and in the presence of heat, fire, smoke, toxic fumes, and other dangerous situations.
Knowledge of fire codes and regulations.
Knowledge of City streets and locations.
Clear verbal communication skills and ability to give and follow written and oral instructions.
Strong interpersonal skills in order to interact with other City employees, public safety agencies, and the general public.

Work Environment ? Environmental or atmospheric conditions commonly associated with the performance of the functions of this job
Varying, inclement outdoor weather conditions and extreme heat and cold non-weather conditions.
Exposure to mechanical and other hazardous fluids, fumes, and airborne particles that require the use of PPE, respiratory protection, and BSI protection.
Work in high, dangerous places and near mechanical moving parts.
Exposure to loud or very loud noise.
Work in hazardous traffic conditions.

Exceptional visual acuity including clarity of vision at 20 feet or more and 20 inches or less, three-dimensional vision, and the ability to distinguish colors.
Precise hand-eye coordination to operate equipment.
Regularly required to sit, talk, hear, stand, and walk while performing station work and responding to emergency situations.
Frequently required to drive, grasp, reach, stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl during emergency situations.
Repetitive wrist, hand, and/or finger movement while operating fire equipment or office machines.
Must be able to lift more than 100 pounds.
Regular attendance is a necessary and essential function.

Residency Requirement: Candidates hired after October 1, 2019, are required to maintain a permanent residence within a thirty-five (35) mile radius of Fire Station 1, 201 Orr St., Columbia, Mo 65201 within 180 days of hire.

A 200 or more word statement describing why you want to be in the Fire Service and what preparations you have made toward a career in firefighting/public safety, is required.

If you are currently a licensed EMT, or a state-certified Firefighter I/Firefighter II please attach a copy of your certification. (Not required in order to be hired).

You must be 21 years old by Monday, September 19, 2022, to be considered for this position.

Anticipated panel interviews: October 3-5, 2022

Anticipated physical agility testing: October 8-9, 2022
