Position: Firefighter Reports to: Department Officer

Supervision Exercise: None FLSA: Non Exempt

General Duties

Firefighters are responsible for performing firefighting and rescue duties at emergency scenes.

Essential Functions:

  1. Responds to alarms, fire and emergency calls
  2. Performs fire suppression, salvage and overhaul of fire scenes
  3. Performs rescue operations
  4. Assists with the delivery of fire and life safety education programs
  5. Assists with fire inspections and pre-incident surveys
  6. Assists with building, apparatus, and equipment maintenance
  7. Attends department meetings, training sessions and other functions as requested

Knowledge of:

1. The physical layout of Alamosa including city streets and the county road system. 2. Safety Fire-fighting procedures.

Ability to:

1. Work in stressful situations.
2. Work safely without presenting a direct safety threat to self and others
3. Follow orders
4. Establish and maintain effective working relations with superior, peers, outside

agencies, and the public.

Education/Experience Required:

1. High school graduation or the equivalent.
2. Prior Firefighting experience is desirable, but not required.

Additional Requirements:

  1. Must possess Colorado Class C operators and have and maintain a good driving record.
  2. Must pass all testing and screening requirements established at the time of application.

Materials and Equipment Used:

Fire-fighting equipment including fire engines, ladder trucks, rescue vehicle, extrication tools, hoses, ladders, chemical extinguishers, bars, hooks, lines, self-contained breathing apparatus, and emergency communication equipment

Working Environment:

Approximately 90% of the essential duties/activities for this position are performed from a vehicle and on foot in adverse conditions: Approximately 10% of the essential duties are performed in a heated station environment. The working environment and the duties of the job itself subject this position to periods of high activity and stress under demanding conditions, including exposure to a confined work area for long periods of time and in inclement weather.

Required Physical Capabilities:

  1. Position requires sufficient strength and manual dexterity to grasp and use fire fighting and extrication equipment.
  2. Position requires the ability to stand, bend, stoop, reach and handle to perform firefighting activities, lifting, and carrying objects heavier than 50 pounds.
  3. Physical activities required to perform essential duties include hearing conversation and traffic, speaking in an understandable voice, see well enough to operate motor-driven equipment in traffic and off road, and use fire fighting equipment.
