Volunteer Firefighter

Job Description
The North Tongass Volunteer Fire Department is dedicated to saving lives and property from fires, medical emergencies, and other disasters. Department members respond to all those who live, work, or simply pass through the community and are dedicated to providing this service in the safest and most cost-efficient manner possible.
Examples of Duties

Basic description of Volunteer Duties:Responds to emergency calls for fire, medical, and other emergencies
Drives fire engine, rescue, tanker, and ambulance
Operates pumps, rescue equipment, medical equipment, and other specialized equipment such as rope rescue equipment
Conducts fire suppression, rescue operations, emergency medical treatment, and other support operations


Volunteer Roles within the DepartmentFirefighter – Conducts fire suppression/overhaul operations
Emergency Medical Services (EMS) – Provides medical monitoring and treatment to the sick or injured
Tanker Driver – Supplies water source for fires in our service area
REHAB – Rehabilitation of department personnel with medical monitoring and refreshments for prolonged incidents
Support – Fireground/EMS scene support operations


Requirements
It is the intent of the North Tongass Volunteer Fire Department to select and screen applicants who will best suit the department's mission and goals according to the membership guidelines. In order for an applicant to be accepted as a member of this organization, you must meet the following guidelines. 

Minimum Basic Requirements
Pre-employment drug testing is required.
18 years of age.
Possess a current and valid driver's license from any state, able to obtain an Alaska drivers license within one year.
Provide criminal and driving background check. The Department will reimburse applicant's expenses upon acceptance as member.
Sign Hepatitis B vaccination form regarding acceptance or declining vaccine.

Additional RequirementsApplicants may be disqualified for any felony or misdemeanor convictions involving, but not limited to, driving, violence, alcohol, drugs—including misuse of prescription drugs, and deceit.
Applicants must not be on any mind-altering prescription drugs or have consumed alcohol while on duty.
Applicants must pass department medical physical and Physical Agility Test (PAT) to be considered for membership.
The membership committee will check a minimum of three references on each applicant. Any unfavorable references may cause the application to be rejected. The membership committee will determine what is unfavorable.
Must have good personal hygiene.
Applicants must understand rules and regulations set forth by the department and division for which they are applying.
