Firefighter/Paramedic

POSTING DATE: 06/17/25 - The Fire-EMS Department is presently accepting applications to fill the vacancy of Firefighter/Paramedic and to create an eligibility list for potential future openings. This is a permanent full-time non-exempt fully-benefited union role, working 24hr rotating shifts: 24 on/ 48 off/ 24 on/ 96 off.

The major duties of this role include firefighting activities and medical emergency care as required to protect the life and property of others as a first responding Firefighter/Paramedic. ***About Townsend Fire-EMS***

Townsend Fire-EMS boasts a rich history of dedicated service to the community. Currently, ten full time members, several per~diem members and over thirty on-call members protect the area. Established in 1875, the Townsend Fire Department originated with three companies: Squannacook Hook and Ladder (Center), Eclipse (West Townsend), and Harbor Hose (Townsend Harbor). These three companies still operate from three stations, housing a fleet that includes three engines, a ladder, a tanker, two forestry units, a rescue vehicle, and two paramedic-level transporting ambulances as well as Medic-1, the Commonwealth's first municipally-operated, paramedic-level, non- transporting ambulance operate out of the center station. Ambulance services are consistently staffed at the paramedic level, providing 24/7 coverage. The department carries up to date equipment including Type-I Ambulances, X-Series Monitors, Ultrasound, Zoll Z-Vent Transport Ventilators, Sapphire IV Pumps, Stryker Power Load Stretchers and several optional medications in accordance with the State Wide Treatment Protocols.

***Compensation & Benefits***

Townsend offers a competitive compensation package through the IAFF Local 4926 CBA. Starting wage is between Step 1 and 2 ($31.35 - $32.13) commensurate with experience, with annual step increases. Benefits include sick, vacation, personal, longevity, and holiday pay. Employees are eligible for Middlesex County Retirement Group 4 and various health, dental, accident, vision, and disability plans.

***Requirements***

Valid MA or National Registry Paramedic certification required; MA certification must be obtained before appointment. Two years of paramedic experience providing care in the 911 setting is preferred. All applicants must possess a valid driver's license and minimum of high school diploma or equivalent. Firefighter 1/11 certification is preferred, but not required. Applicants who are not already Firefighter 1/11 certified must successfully pass the Massachusetts Career Recruit Firefighter training program through the Massachusetts Fire Academy upon hire.

*** Interview Process***

Qualified applicants will be evaluated by a resume review, oral panel interview, both a written as well as
an oral board paramedic skills evaluation, and an extensive background investigation. Qualified applicants will possess the ability to obtain authorization to practice within the UMASS medical control system in accordance with Health-Alliance Clinton Hospital Leominster Campus AHMD policy. Applicants must live within a 15-mile radius of Townsend within one year of hire per the Firefighter Union's CBA.
