SUMMARY:
Performs firefighting, rescue and emergency medical services.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
This class specification lists the major duties and requirements of the job and is not all-inclusive.
Incumbent(s) may be expected to perform job-related duties other than those contained in this
document and may be required to have specific job-related knowledge and skills.
• Responds to emergencies and performs fire suppression, rescue, and emergency
medical duties as required.
• Operates and inspects emergency, fire, rescue, medical and life saving tools and
equipment.
• Maintains Fire Department facilities, equipment and supplies; cleans, repairs and
returns equipment to service after use.
• Assists in the maintenance of required departmental and emergency response
records.
• Performs preventive maintenance of vehicles and equipment.
• Participates in fire drills and attends regular classes in fire-fighting, fire prevention,
equipment maintenance and related subjects.
• Remains current on City infrastructure to ensure thorough knowledge of all streets,
alleys, terrain and buildings.
• Responds to hazardous materials incidents and assists in the identification, mitigation
and containment of hazardous material spills.
• Promotes and supports the overall mission of the City by demonstrating courteous
and cooperative behavior when interacting with public and staff; acts in a manner
that promotes a harmonious and effective workplace environment.
QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Experience:
High School Diploma/GED.
Required Certificates, Licenses, and Registrations:
Continued employment is contingent upon all required licenses and certificates being maintained in active
status without suspension or revocation.
• Driver’s License.
• State Alaska Firefighter 1 certification within six (6) months of date of employment.
• State of Alaska EMT-1 certification within six (6) months of employment.

• Fire-fighting equipment, methods and techniques.
• Fire behavior, fire chemistry and suppression agents.
• Principles and practices of emergency medical response.
• Applicable laws, codes and regulations.
• Basic maintenance of fire equipment and tools.
• Record management principles and practices.
• Arithmetic computations and formulas
• Correct business English, including spelling, grammar and punctuation.
Required Skills:
• Performing firefighting, rescue, and emergency medical duties.
• Safe operation and maintenance of a wide variety of fire fighting and EMS equipment
and tools.

• Interpreting, applying and explaining applicable laws, codes and regulations.

threatening conditions.
