Job Summary

This position is FLSA nonexempt (full-time).  This position works with others both in a professional office setting and in high noise, poor visibility, limited mobility, at heights, and in enclosed or confined spaces.  The essential function of the position within the organization is to provide Fire, Haz-Mat and EMS services.  The position is responsible for responding to fires and other emergency situations, mitigating the situation, providing emergency medical services, transporting patients for further care, facility and equipment maintenance, training, and preparing related records and reports.  The position works under direct supervision according to set procedures.

Minimum Qualifications

The State of Alabama Fire College and Personnel Standards Commission Administrative Code require all firefighters to be at least 18 years old.  

Requires high school diploma or GED. 

Employee must have current CPAT certificate. Must maintain a current State of Alabama Driver’s License.

Requires Firefighter I, Firefighter II, Haz-Mat A/O, and R.I.T. certification and Emergency Medical Technician License within twelve months of employment as a condition of employment.

All employees hired after March 1992 must maintain EMT Basic license as a condition of employment.

No related experience is required.  

Any equivalent combination of education, experience and training which provides the required knowledge, abilities and skills may be considered as determined by the hiring authority.

Applicants are required to submit to a background check, post offer medical examination and random drug and alcohol testing as a condition of employment.

Candidate must successfully pass a Post-Offer – Validated Essential Job Functions and Physical Demands Evaluation.

Essential Job Functions

Responds to fire or other emergencies such as natural disasters, hazardous material incidents, medical emergencies, or transportation accidents; serves as backup driver.

Assesses situations and takes mitigating action, such as rescuing persons from danger, extinguishing fires, or setting up boundaries to keep spectators at a safe distance from the hazard.

Identifies persons requiring immediate medical care; provides medical services and transports injured or sick persons for further medical care as required.  

Trains on basic firefighting, streets and numbers, hydrant locations, business locations, hydraulics and Fire Department equipment on an on-going basis to maintain peak condition and response ability.
