POSITION PURPOSE |
Under general direction of the Fire Chief, responsible for providing fire/EMS personnel direction in fire management/suppression and emergency medical services. Protects the life, property, and natural resources of the Pueblo of Acoma by responding to emergencies related to fire, medical, and accident and situations. Maintains confidentiality of all privileged information. |
ESSENTIAL DUTIES, FUNCTIONS & RESPONSIBILITIES |
- Responsible for response to fire, emergency and medical services, and rescue attention by determining location immediately ad prepares plans for improvement in services.
- Respond to reported emergencies such as fires, accidents, emergency medical incidents and incidents involving hazardous materials.
- Direct firefighters to the scene, assess, and report on conditions at the scene, develop an action plan, assume command of all firefighting, rescue ad public service operation
- Manage and perform emergency scene operation involving life-saving and property protection work; conduct size-up, resource request and assignment, confinement, extinguishment, salvage and overhaul.
- Supervise, plan, evaluate, train, motivate, direct, and participate in the work assignments and activities of firefighters.
- Conduct orientation, training, and practice drills in all phases of fire suppression and related activities of firefighters.
- Maintain the capabilities, required standards, and readiness of firefighters; conduct training related to fire prevention, public education, accident prevention, and department safety practices.
- Inspects fire station and equipment to ensure tools, equipment, apparatus, and materials needed for fire suppression and emergency services are clean, stored properly, and fully operational at all times.
- Schedule and conduct training classes on medical protocol, fire prevention, safety, treatment and care of sick and injured, CPR and First Aid, including drills in physical conditioning sessions for firefighters.
- Maintains appropriate documentation on incidences as required by policies and procedures. Generates reports as needed.
- Conduct fire prevention inspections for commercial and residential structures; follow up on routine and recommended repairs and corrections; refer non-routine inspections or inspection results to Fire Chief.
- Responsible for proper maintenance and care of all equipment, apparatus, fire station and grounds; direct and participate in periodic inspection of same to ensure that all assigned equipment, apparatus, facilities, and supplies are in a state of readiness; ensure completion of proper maintenance, documentation and repairs.
- Perform administrative duties such as maintaining records, writing reports on the work activities such as fire and emergency reports, daily logbook, equipment maintenance logs, and issue performance evaluations.
- Update and maintain current maps and charts; must be familiar with fire hydrants, water mains, and sprinkler systems.
- Conducts regular staff meetings to communicate, discuss and update personnel regarding departmental goals, objectives and activities.
- Evaluates employee skills and performance levels to ensure that standards of operations are being met.

- Improves staff effectiveness by coaching, counseling, training and recommending disciplinary action for employees; planning, delegating, monitoring, and appraising job tasks and results in a timely manner.
- Updates professional knowledge by conducting research; attending seminars, educational workshops, classes and conferences; reviewing professional publications, establishing networks; participating in professional societies; and conferring with representatives of contracting agencies and related organizations.
- Maintain a level of physical fitness to meet job requirements and perform job functions; maintain current knowledge of new firefighting and fire prevention principles, techniques, and methods.
- Contributes to a team effort and accomplishes related results as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Experience: • Five years’ experience as a firefighter or relevant experience • Three years supervisory experience

Associate degree in Fire Science and Protection or relevant field

- Knowledge of the principles and practice of fire department administration, including budgeting, programplanning and development and employee supervision and training.
- Knowledge of fire behavior and fire suppression principles, method, techniques, and practices.
- Knowledge of operation and maintenance of modern firefighting equipment and apparatus.
- Knowledge of emergency medical techniques.
- Knowledge of fire codes, methods of residential and commercial construction, and techniques relative to thedetermination of origin and cause of hostile and non-hostile fires.
- Knowledge of department rules, regulations, policies, and procedures; local automatic aid agreements, local,state, and federal mutual aid plans.

- Knowledge of local geography, including the location of water mains, hydrants, and major target hazards, fuel modes, and traffic hazards of the department.
- Knowledge of applicable standards of care, including equipment functions and uses.
- Skill in providing leadership to, supervising, training, and evaluating assigned staff.
- Skill in understanding and interpreting complex statutes, ordinances, regulations and standards.
- Skill in evaluating operations to determine if they meet the community’s needs.

PREFERENCES IN EMPLOYMENT
